Three compact disc set of vocal artistry from the exponents of the Patiala Gharana.
The collection is a tribute by Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, accompanied by his son Raza Ali Khan, to his mentor and guru, the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan who reigned supreme as a highly original classicist.
With his powerful, lyric-dramatic voice, Ustad Munawar Ali Khan is here at his finest in an imaginatively devised collection of various ragas, soulful bhajans and vivacious thumris. Ustad Munawar Ali Khan & Raza Ali Khan is obviously at home in repertoire and sing with a nice rhythmic feeling as well as plenty of fervour. Through their talent and genius the duo make the bare notes vibrate, pulsate and come alive.

The small company continues to issue top class recordings of top class Indian performers. This triple-set will appear to those who really follow North Indian classical singing, but should also appeal to listeners who've been opening their ears wider since the West discovered the rest of the world. The music on this set is sung by Khan and his son, both of whom are carrying on a house-style going back a long time in history: their vocal agility puts many singers to shame. The mood and the atmosphere throughout are well-captured on this all-digital recording. They sing with great warmth and presence on both the serious material, and the often cheerier popular songs. The tabla playing by Tanmoy Bose is tight and tasty. He never overplays, and always seems to match the mood of the singers perfectly. Sure, this is specialist stuff, but it's a bit special too. - [Rated Excellent] Hi-Fi News & Reviews Feb 90 (rated Excellent, Ken Hyder)
