Kabir's without doubt one of the greatest figures in India's religious history. He was openly critical of any faith in which the individual's search for God was obstructed by rituals, pilgrimages and rigid written scripture.

The verses of Kabir sung on this recording by Pandit Purshotamdas Jalota have been arranged in three thematic sections. The first is on Guru Mahima - the status of the guru, referring both to the ' inner voice' and, perhaps, to a human guru also. The second section is on Maya - illusion or the material world of wealth and greed. The third section is called Chetavani - a religious and moral discourse which reminds mankind of the true purpose of the life.
